Behind the Pitch: A Note to Journalists from the PR Trenches

Dear Journalists,

We know your inbox is a war zone.

You’re juggling tight deadlines, constant pressure to publish, shrinking newsrooms, and a flood of pitches. We won’t pretend otherwise. We know a lot of PR emails miss the mark. Some are lazy. Some are generic. Some should never have been sent.

That frustration is valid, but we wanted to offer a little context from our side of the inbox. Because at the end of the day, we’re all collaborators trying to make good stories happen.

What It Looks Like on Our Side

PR isn’t just blasting pitches into the void. At least, not the way we practice it.

We’re translating complex businesses into narratives that are accurate and useful. We’re pushing clients to share real data instead of vague claims. We’re coaching nervous founders before interviews. We’re navigating legal reviews, compliance teams, and internal politics to get something clear and credible in your hands.

When a pitch is concise, tailored, and actually relevant to your beat, that didn’t happen by accident. There were internal debates and edits; there was probably someone advocating hard for clarity over fluff.

We care about your time because wasted time helps no one.

We Know PR Has a Reputation

There’s a long history of tension between journalists and PR professionals. Some of it is earned. Journalists deal with off-target pitches, inflated claims, and relentless follow-ups. That’s exhausting, we get it.

At the same time, the best PR people are trying to do something aligned with your mission: provide credible sources, real data, and connect you with experts who can add depth to your reporting.

When PR is working the way it should, it supports journalism instead of undermining it.

Why This Matters Now

The media landscape is shifting fast. Newsrooms are leaner. Marketing teams are under pressure. AI is reshaping visibility and discoverability. Attention is fragmented.

In that environment, strong working relationships matter more than ever.

We rely on you to tell nuanced, impactful stories. You rely on us (whether directly or indirectly) for access, context, and expertise. We’re both better off when we treat this like a partnership, not a standoff.

What We Hope You Know About Us

  • We’re trying to send you stories that make sense for your audience.
  • We welcome feedback when something misses.
  • We don’t take it personally when you pass.
  • We value transparency and honesty as much as you do.

And if you ever want to tell us how to make your life easier? We’re listening. Because the real win isn’t PR coverage or a byline. It’s lasting, collaborative relationships and strong, accurate stories that serve readers and move industries forward.

From one over-caffeinated, deadline-driven group of professionals to another…thanks for the work you do.

Sincerely,
Your friends in PR
