A Local’s Guide to ATX During SXSW

by Nycole Walsh

It’s SXSW season here in Austin, which means Kickstand’s favorite city is getting ready to host thousands of tech enthusiasts, creatives, and music lovers from all over the world.

And while the conference itself is obviously packed with panels, networking, and brand activations galore, much of the magic happens when you step outside the convention halls and experience SXSW like an Austinite.

The Kickstand team knows our way around this city, so whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned SXSW pro, we’ve put together our top recommendations to help you make the most of your time in ATX—beyond the badge.

Good eats

A visit to Austin is a visit wasted if you don’t sit down for some good old-fashioned Texas barbecue. Franklin gets all the hype, but we’d advise you to skip that VERY long line and head to Micklethwait on Tanney Street – you won’t be disappointed.

If you just have to try something from the chef behind Franklin but don’t have time to camp out in the aforementioned line, head to Loro on South Lamar. This must-try spot blends the goodness of Texas BBQ with Southeast Asian flavors, courtesy of the celebrated teams behind Uchi and Franklin Barbecue. Grab a seat on the roomy patio and enjoy a brisket bánh mì and a frozen gin & tonic.

For more upscale vibes, head to Fonda San Miguel. One of Austin’s most stunning and iconic restaurants, it serves up delicious interior Mexican cuisine in a setting filled with vibrant artwork and lush greenery. Located in the Allandale neighborhood, just a short drive from downtown, it’s a perfect escape from the SXSW hustle (plus the area is packed with unique vintage shops and boutiques worth exploring before or after your meal). A true local institution, this is the spot for those who believe that no trip to Austin is complete without incredible Mexican food—which is the official stance of the Kickstand team, FYI.

Drinks and snacks

Want to mix drinks with a bit of arcade nostalgia? Head to Cidercade, where $12 gets you unlimited play on dozens of vintage and modern arcade games. They also offer a wide selection of ciders and seltzers, all made in-house.

If you’re looking for a laid-back patio to grab a drink near the Convention Center, Yellow Jacket Social Club in East Austin is a solid pick. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but the relaxed vibe and excellent cocktails make it a longtime favorite among locals.

Or for something a little more intimate, Midnight Cowboy is one of the oldest speakeasies in Austin. Located on the infamous 6th Street, you’ll need a reservation and a sharp eye to find it—but trust us, it’s worth it.

Starting your day

Coffee fanatics rejoice! Austin has plenty of options for jumpstarting your morning right in the downtown area. Skip the line at Starbucks and check out Desnudo Coffee on Congress Ave. Just a short walk from the Convention Center, this small-but-mighty coffee truck is known for its wide selection, fresh roasts, and commitment to supporting small coffee farmers.

If you need a caffeine AND a shopping fix, wander into BookPeople, the biggest bookstore in the state! In addition to good vibes and good books, this charming neighborhood staple has its very own café – CoffeePeople. Get a drink and leaf through the latest bestseller or a SXSW speaker’s new book.

For a perfect mix of coffee, beer, and a laid-back Austin vibe, Radio Coffee & Beer in South Austin is a must-visit. With top-notch espresso, breakfast tacos, and an inviting outdoor space, it’s a great spot to start your day or wind down after the festival buzz.

Downtime delights

Between sessions, make sure to take a break and explore some of Austin’s more unique local experiences. And if you’re looking for a truly one-of-a-kind Austin tradition, head to The Little Longhorn Saloon for Chicken Sh*t Bingo. Oh yeah, you read that right. Every Sunday, locals and visitors gather at this North Austin honky-tonk to watch a chicken determine the winning bingo square. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and it’s absolutely peak Austin.

Or if you’re in the mood for live music and a true Texas experience, make your way to The White Horse. They offer free two-step lessons on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 7 pm—no experience necessary, just bring your boots (and bravery).

For an escape from the action, take a stroll through Pease Park and check out the Treehouse. This green oasis is perfect for a midday reset, a picnic, or a quick Instagram-worthy shot from the treetop lookout.

SXSW is an incredible time to be in Austin, but as with any conference, the best experiences often happen outside the official programming. Whether you’re eating your way through the city, exploring hidden gems, or dancing the night away at a honky-tonk, there’s no shortage of ways to immerse yourself in ATX culture.

So get out there, explore, and make the most of your time in our weird, wonderful city. And if you find yourself thinking, “I could get used to this,” well—you wouldn’t be the first.

See y’all out there!
